HMRC Connect: how the taxman is targeting taxpayers' personal data

The increasing power of HMRC’s data manipulation tool, Connect, is a warning for all taxpayers as the authorities gather more powers to interrogate individual taxpayer data and identify potential tax avoidance by analysing individuals' behavioural and spending patterns, warns Neil Tipping, senior tax consultant 

Every few years, we are reminded of George Orwell’s take on how the future world will develop through media citing his oft-quoted 1984 for its prescience. The suggestion that Orwell’s version of our future is slowly coming to pass, albeit not quite within his timescale, is becoming a chronic truism.  HMRC’s use and development of its information system, Connect, appears to be bringing such fears into sharp focus.
