HMRC spends £202m on IT staff salaries, up 7% in a year

The total budget for HMRC’s IT function exceeded £1.1bn in 2025-26, up 17% year on year as salary costs soared despite little change in overall staff numbers

HMRC’s IT function had a budget of £1,106,756,452 in 2025-26, up 17% on the previous financial year 2024-25. The budgeted figure was up by double digits from the actual spend of £948m in 2024-25, although this was lower than the £1.02bn spend two years ago.

The costs relate to the HMRC function, actual full year costs for the historical full year periods and the full year budget for the last financial year (April 2025 to March 2026).
