The claimant had worked at the Cardiff office of HMRC for seven years from 2018 until he left in 2024, after a period of ‘systemic bullying’ from his manager. He claimed for disability discrimination, harassment and victimisation against HMRC and his manager in the in-house training team, and won his case at the employment tribunal.
At an employment tribunal HMRC and an individual manager were held ‘jointly and severally liable’, in a claim centred on whether the claimant, Mr R Wickham, had depression and whether the manager recognised this in a claim for disability discrimination and victimisation. Finding for the claimant, the tribunal ordered HMRC to pay £155,077 in compensation for past financial losses and injury to feelings, including interest.
