HMRC will not ‘routinely visit properties’ for mansion tax checks

Claims HMRC will visit 165,000 properties to assess for mansion tax denied, saying not ‘routine’ and ‘any visits would take place by prior agreement’

Over the weekend, reports began to circulate that HMRC was planning home inspections as part of targeted mansion tax enforcement, a claim since rejected by tax officials.

After being introduced at Budget 2025 by then chancellor Rachel Reeves, the mansion tax, known as the high value council tax surcharge (HVCTS), has come in for some criticism.
