After bank accounts frozen, Charity Commission appoints interim managers to Barnabas Fund, a Christian based aid charity beset by financial and governance issues
The Barnabas Fund, known as Barnabas Aid, was placed under statutory inquiry under section 46 of the Charities Act 2011 in September 2024 to investigate serious governance and financial concerns including allegations of unauthorised payments to some of the current and former trustees and related parties.
The decision to investigate led to the charity’s decision to remove the charity’s then international CEO and trustee, while more than three quarters of staff resigned. Then in January 2025, already 18 months ago, the Charity Commission again intervened to freeze bank accounts in January 2025.
Fast forward 18 months and the investigation has escalated with the appointment of interim managers at Barnabas Aid by the Charity Commission, taking over the duties of the trustees, who have been removed from day to day involvement.
