International reporting: March 2015

Jeroen van Doorsselaere, IFRS expert, considers the hot topics at the recent IASB board meeting where IFRS for SMEs and discussions on leasing and lease disclosures under the proposed new standard were the priority, despite the lack of transatlantic convergence

In a recent speech to International Financial Reporting Standards’ (IFRS) trustees in Zurich, Hans Hoogervorst, president of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), expressed the organisation’s concern about countries like Switzerland which still offer organisations a choice between complying with the IFRS version of GAAP or a Swiss version of the guidelines. As a result, he said that smaller companies are increasingly moving to the Swiss version.

The major reason for the concern lies with the overload of disclosures which is coming the IASB’s way and in which Swiss GAAP offers Swiss firms a safer haven with some easier measurement techniques as well.

Is this a trend among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)?
