Last chance for late Self Assessment filers

HMRC are reminding taxpayers who failed to complete a Self Assessment tax return for any year up to 2011-12 that they have until 15 October to take advantage of HMRC's 'My Tax Return Catch Up' campaign.

The campaign was launched on 9 July and is aimed at people who received a Self Assessment tax return, or a notice to complete a tax return for any year up to and including 2011-12, but have failed to submit it.

Taxpayers can tell HMRC that they want to join the campaign by completing an electronic notification form available on the HMRC website, completing and posting a notification form also available on the HMRC website, or calling the My Tax Return Catch Up Helpline.

Once they have told HMRC that they want to take part in the campaign, they have until 15 October 2013 to complete and submit a tax return, and pay the tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs) that they owe.

After 15 October, if they have not submitted their returns and paid the tax due, penalties of up to 100% of the tax, or even criminal investigation, could follow.

More details about the campaign are available from HMRC HERE
