Lidl employee wins £48k unfair dismissal case

An employment tribunal found a former construction consultant for Lidl was unfairly dismissed due to age discrimination, winning more than £48,000

Wayne Norman, 63, worked as a senior construction consultant building and refurbishing supermarkets for the Lidl. At the time his employment came to an end, the claimant had worked for the respondent for 22 years.

Lidl decided to restructure and go from three to one of the post the claimant held. A group meeting was held, and they were told they would be scored on certain criteria to identify who was at risk of redundancy.

The supermarket chain provided the managers carrying out the redundancy with a plan to follow, along with standard documentation to be used throughout. This included the selection criteria to be applied and some guidance on completing it.
