Making tax digital consultations: what you need to know

In a week of consultation overload, HMRC has released six documents setting out plans for the transition to Making Tax Digital covering unincorporated businesses, self-employed, indivudal taxpayers, pensioners and landlords, although quarterly reporting for business is still expected. Monday saw the publication of the long-awaited and much-anticipated consultation documents for Making Tax Digital (MTD). Although the government’s ambition - to create one of the most digitally advanced tax administrations in the world by 2020 – remains the same, there are a number of changes and, in my view, a softening of tone. It would appear that the government has listened to the professional bodies and other stakeholders, and that it will continue to listen as the project develops.
