Making Tax Digital: plans smack of HMRC power grab

Chas Roy-Chowdhury, head of taxation at the ACCA, casts his expert eye over the six digital tax consultations and is not convinced about the need for such a wholesale overhaul of tax administration, which will add to volumes of existing tax compliance

Six consultation documents and counting. We had expected them to see the light of day back in April but then came the local authority elections. We then expected them before June but then came the EU referendum and the change in the political administration and the minister with oversight of HMRC with the appointment of Jane Ellison MP as financial secretary to the Treasury.

So the making tax digital consultations finally appeared on 15 August.
