Moore and Smalley, ranked at number 47 in the Accountancy league table, has revealed its best ever financial year for turnover and employee numbers, with fee income up 11%.  Managing partner Graham Gordon explains the firm's growth strategy

The firm, which has offices across Lancashire, Cumbria, Manchester, Merseyside and East Midlands, has seen turnover rise 11% from £12.8m to £14.2m, with staff numbers rising from 246 to 277, an increase of 13%.

Graham Gordon, who was elected managing partner in 2013, said: ‘the increase is due to a combination of a few years of hard work and employees understanding what the firm does and what it is trying to achieve.’

As well as this there has been repositioning and refocusing of the teams.

The firm carried out individual surveys as well as client surveys in order to gain a clear picture of what was expected from them. In the recent annual client satisfaction survey, the firm scored highly across key areas with 95% of the respondents saying they would recommend the firm.

Moore and Smalley also opened regional hubs in Manchester and Liverpool and cites the demand for specialist advice as a reason behind its growth, along with new services.

Specialists are available to clients in a wide range of areas such as healthcare, motor trade and professional practices, amongst others.

Moore and Smalley now has client relationship managers (CRM) to deliver these specialist services to their clients. The CRMs are able to call on specialists, centred to the client’s needs.

Graham Gordon, who was elected managing partner in 2013, said: ‘Our accountancy and audit services continue to perform well but we’ve seen major growth in specialist departments. Our tax team is now one of the largest in the region and our corporate finance team has seen a rise in deal transactions.

‘We have also launched a new cloud accountancy service for small enterprises and the self-employed called SE+, which has resonated with digital savvy business owners looking to utilise new technology.’

Over the course of the year Moore and Smalley welcomed 31 new employees to its regional offices including Jon Pinder, who joined as partner, and Andrew Selby who arrived as an employee benefits expert in the financial planning team in February from Finch.

Gordon said: ‘many employees that had left the firm in previous years have returned and key individuals and partners in other firms are increasingly showing an interest in working for Moore and Smalley.’

The 2015/16 annual results would put the firm in the top 40 accounting firms in the UK.
