Nearly one in 10 charities fail to file accounts

The latest annual report from the Charity Commission shows that 8% of charities failed to file an annual return by the deadline

The Commission is currently consulting on extending the annual return to require more information about the financial source of funding and to clamp down on potential fraud.

In 2021-22, the Commission concluded 5,324 regulatory action cases, down from 5,499 in 2020-21. Of these, 45 were statutory inquiries, the most serious type of regulatory engagement. This compared to 64 statutory inquiries concluded in 2020-21. There was a slight drop in the number of new enquiries opened, down from 59 the previous year to 49 this year.
