Overseas property owner register – what you need to know

A clampdown on overseas property owners means all property sales now need to be listed on the register of overseas entities, explains Dhruv Patel ACA CTA, director of tax and accountancy at Elemental CoSec

In August, Companies House began writing to overseas entities that owned property or land in the UK outlining their new legal obligations. Using Land Registry data, we estimate that Companies House will be sending out over 30,000 of these letters.

The main call to action is to speak to a UK-regulated agent, and the first profession the letter mentions is accountants. Accounting firms are now being approached by their clients for help. Here’s what firms should know before they act.
