The main rates of income tax for 2010-11 will remain at 20% for basic rate taxpayers (incomes over £6,475; £9,490 age 65-74; £9,640 age 75 and over) and 40% for higher rate taxpayers (incomes over £37,400).
As announced in the Budget 2009, an additional rate of tax of 50% will apply on income over £150,000.
The point at which individuals start to pay the higher rate of income tax will be maintained at 2011/12 levels in 2012/13. The upper earnings limit and the upper profits limit for national insurance will continue to be aligned with the higher rate threshold.
The chancellor pledged to protect those on lower incomes by indexing the personal allowance in line with inflation in 2012/13.
