Premier League clubs score £5.5bn revenue high

Premier League clubs topped the football money league with record matchday and commercial revenues across Europe despite a fall in broadcast revenues

Revenue growth in the Premier League continued to outpace that of the major European leagues, with clubs reporting a 12% rise in overall revenues in the 2021/22 season, to a record revenue of £5.5bn. Operating profits (excluding player trading) totalled £459m in 2021/22, down £1m on the previous season, shows analysis by Deloitte’s sport business group.

Premier League clubs’ net debt fell by 34% to £2.7bn (20/2021: £4.1bn) at the end of 2021/22, with the acquisitions of Chelsea and Newcastle United by new owners a reason for this reduction.

The overall European football market saw revenue growth of 7% to €29.5bn (£25.2bn) in the 2021/22 season, driven by record matchday and commercial revenues, following the lifting of pandemic restrictions.
