Retail sector sees nearly 15,000 job losses

Nearly 15,000 retail jobs have already been cut since January with supermarkets and high street shops making staff redundant

So far in 2023, a total of 14,874 retail job losses have been announced following a ‘brutal start’ to the year, according to analysis by the Centre for Retail Research (CRR).

Since January, 11,689 job losses have been recorded at large retailers including Tesco and Asda, following restructuring of operations.

Tesco confirmed a series of new redundancies for 2023 with more than 2,000 roles to be cut, following a restructuring of its management teams.

The retail chain will be cutting the number of lead and team managers across all UK stores, expecting to see around 1,750 jobs cut.
