A Spanish court has annulled Shakira’s multimillion tax penalty for €60m (£52m) ordering tax authority to reimburse the full amount with interest over residency dispute.

The case related to Shakira’s time in Spain when she was in a relationship with Barcelona FC player, footballer Gerard Pique.

The Spanish tax authority argued the Columbian singer owed the tax on her worldwide earnings as she was resident in Spain in 2011, but the National Court in Madrid has overturned the ruling, saying the penalties and assessments were ‘imposed on her improperly’ and were ‘contrary to law’.

The court quashed the assessments and ordered the refund of the total amount of €54.7m plus interest, totalling €60m.
