Sunak was asked by the inquiry's lawyer, Richard Wright KC, about his first few months of being chancellor, describing it as an ‘incredibly intense period’.

When asked about measures the Treasury took when the UK first went into lockdown, Sunak said: ‘We almost had to deliver five Budgets in the space of two weeks, in terms of the scale of what was being announced, they were bigger than any Budget announced by any chancellor.’

Continuing he said ‘It felt like for a period we were doing one of those every two days for that first two weeks – it was an incredibly intense period – It felt that every second day I was popping up and doing a press conference announcing something.’
