The taxman is on the warpath.

Taskforces and campaigns are underway aiming to collect an additional £7bn in tax revenue each year by 2012/13.

Intensive bursts of compliance activity are targeting business sectors that are considered to be high risk for HMRC, such as restaurants and fast food outlets, plumbers, medical practitioners and private tutors.

But, according to Mike Eland, director general enforcement and compliance at HMRC: ‘Only those who choose to break the rules or deliberately evade the tax they should be paying will be targeted. Honest businesses have absolutely nothing to worry about’.
