Tax tips for couples this Valentine’s Day

On top of the usual Valentine’s Day treats of chocolate and flowers, tax and advisory firm Blick Rothenberg highlights the tax gifts that you can give to your partner this year

The firm states that there are many things that can be done in regard to tax that will definitely brighten up your Valentine’s Day. One of the easy wins is that if you are married or in a civil partnership then you may be eligible for the marriage allowance.

If your taxable income is below the personal allowance, which is currently £12,570, and your spouse/civil partner is a basic rate taxpayer, then you can transfer up to 10% of your allowance which would save them tax of up to £252.

HMRC has also released a reminder of this tax-saving tactic, the tax authority says that it’s free to sign up and there’s no deadline for applying, and applicants can backdate their claims for any of the four previous tax years. This means that those eligible could possibly receive a payment of up to £1,220.
