Making Tax Digital delayed until 2020

The government has caved into pressure over Making Tax Digital and has delayed rollout by two years to 2020 although all companies will have use the system to report VAT from 2019.

The original plan from the government and HMRC would have forced the smallest businesses and sole traders to start quarterly reporting from April 2017, but those below the VAT threshold (currently £85,000) will now be exempt from requirements to quarterly report until at least 2020.

VAT reporting for all businesses over the current £85,000 threshold will start from 2019 with a mandatory requirement to submit returns through Making Tax Digital.

Full-blown quarterly reporting will not start before ‘at least 2020’ according to the ministerial statement.
