Simple assessment to end tax returns

HMRC has confirmed the details for the new simple assessment system, designed to end the traditional tax return process, under which taxpayers who used to provide information via self assessment will no longer need to do so, as returns will now be pre-populated by HMRC with existing data from other sources.

From September 2017 this option applies to two groups. These are new state pensioners with income over the personal tax allowance in the tax year 2016/17 and PAYE taxpayers who have underpaid tax and cannot have that tax collected through their tax code.
