Treasury bombarded with 5m malicious emails

According to official figures, the Treasury has been hit with 4,870,389 ‘malicious emails’ over the last three years

In the last year, the number of attacks stood at 1,680,238, between October 2020 to September 2021.

The data, which was obtained by the Parliament Street think tank using a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, also reported that between October 2019 to September 2020 there were 1,918,944 malicious emails and from October 2018 to September 2019 there were 1,271,207.

The attacks, which were successfully blocked, included phishing, spam, and malware threats which were designed to obtain confidential financial data from the government.
