Treasury forms child trust fund ‘taskforce’ as £1.6bn unclaimed

Taskforce opened to encourage young people to access funds, with more than 750,000 accounts unclaimed worth £1.6bn, although charity states Treasury ‘not going far enough’

Nationwide, HSBC, Sheffield Mutual and Yorkshire Building Society are among members of a Treasury taskforce meeting for the first time, in push to reunite young people with unclaimed matured Child Trust Funds (CTFs).

Around 6.3m CTF accounts were opened for children born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011, predominantly by parents and guardians, with the rest opened by HMRC.

The CTF scheme was included in the Labour Party's 2001 general election manifesto under the chancellorship of Gordon Brown, and was launched in 2005, with children born on or after 1 September 2002 eligible.
