Students face a hike in tuition fees as education secretary Bridget Phillipson confirmed a rise from £9,250 to £9,535 in September 2025
This was the first rise in fees for eight years and longer term the plan is to increase fees to over £10,000 by 2029-30.
The decision was leaked to the press ahead of the announcement, causing anger as parliamentary process had been ignored by Labour.
Before Phillipson could tell MPs of her decision, Lindsay Hoyle, speaker of the House of Commons chastised the MP and demanded an internal investigation be carried out to find the source of the leak.
Hoyle said: ‘I now hope that the secretary of state is going to announce the leak enquiry and that we will get all the details of how this could have got out and the House will be informed once that goes forward.’
Phillipson said it was a ‘deep regret’ the information was leaked to the media before being formally announced.
