A UBS banker has been sentenced to three years in jail for helping a real estate developer evade $7.2m(£4.4m) in taxes, which the US authorities discovered whilst he aided them with their investigation of the Swiss bank. During the Internal Revenue Service's probe, Bradley Birkenfield, who worked as a private banker in Geneva, revealed that he helped Igor Olenicoff hide millions of dollars worth of assets in Liechtenstein, reports WebCPA. The banker also stated that he would regularly travel to the US to advise clients of how they could evade paying high levels of tax in their own jurisdiction. This included advising American clients to buy luxury items such as art works and jewellery using their Swiss accounts whilst they were abroad and to destroy any evidence of their offshore banking records. Three years ago, the US authorities filed a legal case against UBS for not revealing the names of 52,000 US investors who held offshore accounts in Switzerland, evading millions in taxes. The bank insisted that due to rigid Swiss banking secrecy laws, it would not impart details of clients. The case ended last week with a victory for the US as UBS was ordered to hand over information on 4,450 US investors to the IRS and the Swiss government.
