Underwood: over-reliance on practice partners?

New year plans fall by the wayside as accounting firms return to the comfort of client service rather than focusing on a long-term strategy, but all businesses need to know where they are going, says Keith Underwood

The first months of the year are a time for making resolutions and then fretting about breaking them while trying to predict what the year may hold.

This seasonal review also applies to accounting businesses. Although the smaller firms in the first quarter of the year are usually frantically busy with tax returns, they do find time in February to invoice all their clients, sit back and take a couple of weeks holiday.

At some stage during these first two months most firms will try to find a few quiet hours to evaluate what developments and strategies might be appropriate for the remainder of year 2020.
