Why set up a companies register?

A transparent register of who owns and controls companies may leave some feeling exposed, but it is a small price to pay for transparency. Penny Sukhraj reports on plans to set up a beneficial ownership register

The announcement of the creation of a central register – which will hold information about who owns and controls companies incorporated in the UK and will be made publicly available – came as no surprise last October.

The government's decision followed the G8 meeting in Northern Ireland in June last year, the highlight of which was David Cameron setting a striking example of commitment to transparency and trust by suggesting a register, in the hope that other jurisdictions would follow suit.
