The total number of families in the UK was 7.65m but 750,000 did not claim the payments.

The latest figures show that the total number of claims was 6.91m, down by 0.6% for each of the last two years, but 2021 saw the figure drop by 1.2%, which was the largest reduction since the high income child benefit charge (HICBC) of £50,000 was introduced in 2013.

The number of families liable for the HICBC is back above the 2013 figure of 360,000 to 390,000. When the charge was introduced in 2013, HMRC ran an advertising and marketing campaign to try to make families aware of the charge.
