Accountants: beware the risk of straying outside your retainer

Juliet Schalker, partner in the dispute resolution team at law firm Debenhams Ottaway, explains what you should watch out for to avoid being on the receiving end of a claim from a director or an insolvent estate

It’s a familiar scenario: a long-standing client calls, looking for a chat and to run a couple of things past you, their trusted adviser. You are able to deal with most of their queries and put their mind at ease, but one or two queries you’re not sure about. This is a valued client and you really want to help them. Would it really hurt to give your view on those points you are not 100% sure on? After all, you have known each other a long time and consider them to be a friend.
