Mehta was first appointed as non-executive chair in February 2021, following the firm’s move to a new governance model separating the roles of its chair and chief executive. In November that year, she was elected to continue in the role until the end of February 2024. 

The change of leadership governance at the Big Four firm followed the resignation of Bill Michael as chair in February 2021 following the fallout from a meeting with the consulting team where Michael was criticised for his handling of complaints about the impact of lockdown on team members.

The confirmation of the appointment followed a process overseen by KPMG’s nominations committee, where both the board and partnership voted in favour of her continuation in the role for a further two-year term to end on 31 March 2026. 

One of Mehta's priorities will be to ensure that KPMG's audit practice focuses on ongoing improvements following the completion of a three-year audit quality transformation programme following audit misconduct related to firm's work on the Carillion audit and to ensure a smooth transition following the decision to merge the consulting and deals business into a new £1.2bn advisory business with 6,700 staff from January 2024.

Mehta has worked at KPMG for over 30 years, specialising in M&A and restructuring and advising private and listed international clients. She is an avid supporter of fast-growth businesses and in 2022 was awarded an MBE for her work supporting female entrepreneurs and services to trade investment. Bina is also an honorary fellow in entrepreneurship at Cambridge Judge Business School.
