Blairs saved £312k stamp duty in property deal

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie Blair avoided paying £312,000 in stamp duty land tax (SDLT) on the purchase of a London property by acquiring an offshore company that owned it the Pandora papers revealed

The papers revealed that the Blairs avoided the £312,000 stamp duty when buying a £6.7m London townhouse by acquiring the offshore company which owned the property.

The four-floor property on Harcourt Street, Marylebone was purchased in 2017 and was used as an office for Cherie Blair’s legal advisory firm Omnia and her foundation for women.

As the couple purchased the company rather than the property, they avoided paying the stamp duty as the tax is not paid when the holding company of a property is acquired rather than the building directly.
