Brain drain: how can accountancy firms stop talent emigrating?

Brexit uncertainty is causing large numbers of talented EU workers to leave the UK but this is not just down to the referendum result says Simon Wright, operations director of CareersinAudit.com, who suggests lack of progression within accountancy firms plays a part

It does not matter which side of the Brexit divorce you are on, recruiting high calibre accountancy professionals in the UK is going to get a whole lot harder.

A recent report by KPMG revealed that the UK risks losing around one million EU workers. The research found that 50% of respondents with PhDs and 39% of those with postgraduate degrees said they were considering leaving, as are 69% of respondents earning over £200,000.

The statistics certainly mirrors the recruitment climate change in the accountancy profession. Talking to recruiters in the profession who rely on sourcing specialised positions from Europe (as well as Middle East) they have confirmed there has been a marked drop of applications.
