A former accountant working for the luxury retailers Burberry and Hackett has been jailed and ordered to pay more than £100,000 which he stole from both brands to fund a string of purchases of high performance cars.
Victor Navarro, from London, was earning £25,000 a year as an accounts clerk at Burberry when he defrauded the fashion chain of £83,200 between August 2007 and July 2010. After resigning from the company, he went on to work at Hackett where he took a further £66,153.
Navarro was jailed for 21 months at Southwark Crown Court last year and has now been ordered to repay £113,658 within six months or face a further two years in prison, under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
The court heard that among the cars Navarro used the cash for was a convertible Porsche Turbo 911, and two BMW X5s. One of the BMWs was bought for £19,500 using cash Burberry owed to a supplier after Navarro claimed the firm was 'funding a company car for him'. He later sold the vehicle for £15,000, and was also found to have made a £66,000 downpayment on a £140,000 Ferrari.
