The value of all national team squads competing in Euro 2016, hosted by France, has been calculated by Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) to see whether this can predict the tournament’s winner
The market values of the 23 players from each team was used to find the squad’s total value.
The results showed that the team with the shortest odds on winning the tournament, Germany (4/1), Spain (5/1), Belgium (11/1), England (8/1) and France (3/1) have the most expansive squads.
England is the fourth most valuable squad, therefore they are expected to get a semi-final spot. In recent performances England made the quarter finals in Euro 2012 co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine however, they got knocked out at the group stage at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Northern Ireland have squads that are a fraction of the value of the bigger teams such as England, so are not expected to get to the later stages of the tournament ie past the group stages.
Having a world class player in the squad can push the value up significantly, Gareth Bale’s £60m value is almost half of the Wales squad put together. Portugal player, Cristiano Ronaldo’s value of £82.5m pushes his team into 6th position.
Rob Alder, AAT head of business development said: ‘Player values generally play a large part in football, with the most expensive teams usually the favourites to win tournaments. Ultimately, when they are out on the pitch, values mean little and it’s simply 11 v 11.’
A table of the squad’s total values, in order, are below:
