Carillion group CEO fined £237k as ‘acted recklessly’

Former boss of collapsed public sector outsourcer Carillion fined £237,700 by regulator as was aware of misstatements in company accounts and did not inform board

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has fined Richard Howson, former group chief executive of Carillion plc a total of £237,700 after he withdrew his challenge to the original penalty decision issued in 2022.

Howson was chief executive of Carillion from 1 January 2012 to 10 July 2017, the period during which the company made misleading statements about a £200m accounting blackhole in the financial statements.

The fine for Howson is the latest in a string of penalties for other senior staff, including a six-figure fine for the group finance director last month.
