Charity trustees avoided £58k in business rates

An education charity has been removed from the register of charities after the regulator found three brothers abused their position as trustees

The Charity Commission accused brothers David, Sidney and Michael Chontow, the only trustees of the Achiezer charity, of exploiting the organisation for personal gain.

Achiezer was registered with the Commission in April 1964, and focused on the relief of poverty, assistance of the elderly, and the advancement of education and religion.

Over a seven-year statutory inquiry, the Commission concluded that Achiezer had entered into a series of financial deals with companies that personally benefitted the brothers.

Between April 2014 and September 2016, the charity had made payments totalling £129,800 to Dasim Partners, a property development company where the brothers were partners.

The inquiry found that the basis of these payments was unclear and that the trustees had not effectively managed conflicts of interest which arose regarding numerous transactions between related organisations and their personal companies.
