Claims against accountants – is your house in order?

Marlene Henderson, partner at Browne Jacobson explains how accountancy firms can protect themselves from legal claims by disgruntled clients, stressing the importance of engagement letters

The year 2023 did not offer up many big claims against accountants, the largest being the failed attempt to recover £63m from PwC in Watchstone Group PLC v PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Accountants’ exposure to claims relating to tax relief and taxation errors will undoubtedly continue to increase this year even though the economic dial has shifted slightly in the right direction.
