Cybersecurity risks: what accountants need to do

Cybersecurity should be a core business control, not a bolt-on, with majority of attacks on SMEs and accountancy firms starting with something as basic as a compromised email login, warns Jonathan Barber, executive director – UK at the Institute of Financial Accountants

For many UK SMEs, cybersecurity still sits uncomfortably between IT problem and ‘something we’ll deal with later’. Yet the reality is that cybercrime has become one of the most common and financially damaging risks facing smaller businesses. Ransomware, phishing attacks, and data breaches no longer only target large corporates. In fact, SMEs are often seen as easier, more profitable prey.

Against this backdrop, accountants are increasingly being drawn into cybersecurity conversations. Not because they are IT specialists, but because cyber risk is now inseparable from financial risk, operational resilience, and regulatory compliance.
