Dog breeders must pay tax on £1k plus sales

Any breeder earning more than £1,000 a year from sales is required to declare income and pay tax, but many are evading the law, warns Gavin Nurse, senior tax manager, EQ Accountants

HMRC’s latest crackdown on dog breeding profits aims to ensure that breeders comply with tax legislation, with significant financial consequences for those who fail to do so, including severe penalties for non-compliance.

The intensified focus on dog breeding dates back to October 2015, when HMRC set up a dedicated taskforce in response to concerns raised by animal welfare groups. It was tasked with cracking down on illegal breeding activities and the associated tax evasion.

Following an exponential rise in the number of breeders, HMRC has announced a renewed focus on the sector.
