Editor’s comment: HMRC remains quiet over MTD

HMRC has kept a low profile in the Making Tax Digital campaign with a lack of communications to the actual end users, bar a deluge of technical consultations, something HMRC may grow to rue in the future, says Sara White, editor, Accountancy

Less than a week before the closing date for the mass consultation on Making Tax Digital, HMRC quietly launched an online forum for instant feedback. The portal was probably a good idea if it had been promoted as part of the overall consultation process but that did not happen.

The late launch of this tool is indicative of the lack of communications around the Making Tax Digital campaign, HMRC’s massive money saving initiative.

The level of concern around the digitalisation programme is highlighted by the fact that HMRC received over 3,000 submissions to its set of six consultations.
