EY achieves carbon negative status

Big Four firm EY has become carbon negative by reducing its absolute emissions to offset and remove more carbon than it emits

The firm’s global emissions for the 2021 financial year reduced by 60% from 2020 falling to 394,000 tonnes of CO2 from 976,000 tonnes of CO2. This reduction also represents a 71% decrease from the 1.3m tons of CO2 emitted in the 2019 baseline year.

Globally EY set an ‘aggressive target’ through seven actions to reduce its emissions and achieve the ambition of net zero by 2025.

The firm states that this was achieved through a significant reduction in business travel due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing delivery of EY’s carbon plan, however, with business travel set to resume, EY states that it will continue to keep its emissions below the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) validated 1.5°C pathway in the 2022 financial year and beyond.
