HMRC chief Homer under fire for handling of Swiss HSBC tax list

HMRC chiefs were under pressure to justify their handling of the HSBC tax avoidance debacle at a fiery hearing before the influential Treasury Select Committee where HMRC's Lin Homer was questioned on the tax authority’s handling of the leaked information, prosecutions, abuse of non-dom status and the relationship with French tax authorities, reports Sara White

The committee, chaired by Andrew Tyrie MP, launched a hostile attack on HMRC chief Lin Homer about HMRC’s relationship with the French tax authorities and its failure to secure agreement on wider use of the Falciani list of UK-based offshore account holders at the private banking arm of HSBC in Switzerland.

HMRC said that it could only share the data with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), rather than exchanging the information with other interested authorities, including the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
