The latest HRMC tax receipt figures reveal that HMRC collected £2.7bn more in national insurance contributions compared to the same period last year when £13.3bn was paid. The £16bn figure is the most national insurance the tax authority has collected in one month in the last 14 years.

This increase was likely due to the 1.25% hike to contributions which was introduced the same month. The only other month with a higher than average level, which sits between £11-14bn throughout 2021, was January 2022 with HMRC collecting £15bn.

Total HMRC tax receipts for April 2022 sat at £69.3bn, which is £10.8bn more than the £58bn which was collected in April 2021. It is also £10bn more than what was collected in March 2022 at £58bn.
