The department is advertising for ‘high potential and high calibre lawyers’ to join HMRC Solicitor’s Office which is headed up by the general counsel and solicitor, Gill Aitken, who oversees a team of around 200 lawyers.  

HMRC is looking to recruit both solicitors and barristers, who may be newly qualified or have several years’ experience.  

The advertisement states: ‘Whether experienced or newly qualified, you will have a strong intellect, an ability to master new areas of law quickly and strong delivery and team-working skills. HMRC would particularly welcome lawyers with experience of tax and/or litigation. However, tax experience is not essential as full training will be provided.’

HMRC says it has vacancies for lawyers to undertake both policy and operational advisory work (which includes drafting legislation) and litigation work. It describes working for the department as ‘challenging but rewarding’, with opportunities to be involved in advising on and drafting important legislation, or to manage top-end cases before courts ranging from the Tax Tribunals to the Supreme Court.

There are a number of posts available, based in London, with salaries ranging from £37,990 for candidates with less than two years’ post qualification experience to £53,196 or more for those with more experience.
