A job opportunity has opened up with the House of Lords economic affairs committee, which is seeking applications for the vacant post of one of its two specialist advisers on the Finance Bill

The part-time role, remunerated by daily fee, will see the adviser working with the economic affairs committee sub-committee on the Finance Bill, which examines the draft bill each year.

Applicants need to have substantial, recent and practical familiarity with the UK tax system and its administration, and, preferably, either possess a recognised UK tax qualification and/or have worked on tax policy in HMRC or the Treasury.

As well as demonstrating a wide-ranging and up-to-date knowledge of the UK tax code, candidates should have a solid understanding of how tax policy is developed and the Finance Bill is drafted to give effect to policy decisions.

They must be able to advise on the scope and effects of legislation clearly and concisely, for example by setting provisions in their wider economic, historical or international contexts; be incisive, articulate and able to draft quickly and clearly, particularly for a non-specialist audience; and have experience of building networks and maintaining relationships with taxation experts (inside and outside government), professional and representative groups, and other key stakeholders.

The closing date for applications is 13 March.

Details of the special adviser role are here.
