How to handle romantic relationships at work

After a number of high profile dismissals over work-based relationships, Beverley Sunderland, managing director of Crossland, examines what steps to take to reduce risks for firms dealing with conflicts of interest, allegations of sexual harassment and claims for unfair dismissal

Office romances have hit the headlines recently. Earlier this month McDonald's CEO, Steve Easterbrook, was dismissed for having a relationship at work and last year Intel boss Brian Kizanich left the company for breach of the ‘non fraternisation-policy’. In both cases there was a complete ban on office relationships and both men were in breach of that.

These cases have sparked a very public debate about whether such a ban is appropriate or not, given that statistics by the TUC show that one in five people meet their future spouse/civil partner in the workplace.
