International reporting: Peter Walton

Peter Walton considers the prolific nature of disclosures and the burden this poses for users of financial reports

Disclosure

Disclosure overload has been the subject of studies by the Financial Reporting Council and the Scottish Institute among many others, and now the International Accounting Standards Board has started work on the subject. Last year it said it would look to include a disclosure framework in its conceptual framework project, this year it hosted a discussion forum in the English Institute's Chartered Accountants' Hall.

In preparation for the discussion forum, the IASB had conducted a survey, the main results of which it published ahead of the discussion. These were:

  • 80% of respondents thought improvements could be made to financial disclosures
