Knighthood for ex-HMRC exec in New Year honours list

Former HMRC executive chair Edward Troup, who stood down at the end of last year, has been given a knighthood in the New Year honours list, which saw nominees from industry and the economy make up 11% of the citations

Troup, who spent five years in an executive role at HMRC following a spell at the Treasury, has been knighted for ‘public service to taxpayers and the tax system’.

Timothy Rossington, finance director, Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, has been made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) for public service. Rossington, who is CIMA-qualified, joined the department in 2015 and was previously finance director of the Department for Communities and Local Government, where he also worked on strategy, communities and local government issues.

Howard Orme, currently the chief financial and operating officer (CFOO) of the Department for Education (DfE) is also made a CB. He joined DfE in October 2016 and leads the insight, resources and transformation directorate, having previously had senior finance roles at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Outside the public sector, Orme, who is a qualified accountant (CGMA, FCMA) has also worked for Unilever and Allied Domecq. His award citation is for ‘for public services especially to finance and building delivery capability’.

There is an OBE for Sarah Churchman, head of talent, inclusion and wellbeing at PwC for her work championing diversity and inclusion in the workplace since establishing the firm’s diversity and inclusion team 15 years ago.

Kevin Ellis, chairman and senior partner of PwC, said: ‘Sarah's passion, energy and commitment to driving awareness and change has been instrumental in PwC's publication of gender and BAME pay gap data. Sarah's influence on the professional services sector and beyond has led to many policies and practices that promote inclusion, making this award richly deserved.’

James Boyle, head of infrastructure architecture for HMRC is awarded an OBE for services to taxpayers and government modernisation, Nora Houston, senior delivery manager at HMRC, is also given an OBE, and there are MBEs for Shimon Fhima, deputy director of transformation and Mubeen Patel, administrative officer of personal tax operations.

Amongst other awards, married couple Chrissie Rucker, founder of The White Company, and Nicholas Wheeler, founder of Charles Tyrwhitt Shirts, receive OBEs for their respective services to retail. John Nelson, chairman, Lloyd's of London has been given a CBE for services to the global promotion of British business and to diversity in the workplace.
