MacKay: will HMRC's tax support service for mid-sized businesses work?

Businesses turning over upwards of £10m or with 20 or more employees will have access to help with tax queries about their growing business under HMRC's new plans. Jane MacKay, head of tax at Crowe Clark Whitehill, asks whether this growth support service targeted at mid-sized businesses will work

There are around 170,000 mid-sized businesses in the UK, defined by HMRC as having UK turnover over £10m and more than 20 employees. Given their importance to the UK economy, HMRC has been undertaking a number of research studies over the last few years to better understand the specific needs and challenges for mid-sized businesses when it comes to tax.

Back in 2014, HMRC set up the mid-sized business team to provide a tailored service to this section of the UK business population and to help them continue to play their important role in the UK economy. The mid-sized team’s aim was to help tax payers locate the right tax guidance, support growing businesses, to help promote and administer tax incentives and reliefs, and improve compliance and tackle tax evasion.
